The history of affiliate marketing goes back to approximately 1994 with the trailblazing music website CDNow.com. They were, as far as most people know, the first site to pay other sites for directing Internet traffic to them. Internet giant Amazon.com soon caught on and became the site most associated with affiliate marketing. Today, the practice of affiliate marketing is used by essentially every major web site in the world to promote their stuffs on the internet.
Why affiliate marketing?
One of the reasons that affiliate marketing has proven to be so popular is that it is completely based on performance. In most cases, the company doing the advertising doesn’t pay a single cent to the site that is carrying their ads unless there is evidence that they have send some Internet traffic back to the advertising site. These are a mere example anyway.

Kalau kita mendaftarkan diri pada 'affiliate program' milik affiliate merchant, artinya kita mendaftarkan diri menjadi salah satu anggota jajaran sales online mereka.
Kata lain bagi affiliate program adalah 'associate programs', 'bounty programs', 'referrer programs', 'partner programs' atau 'revenue sharing programs'. Semuanya sama saja! Hanya beda kata. Saya sendiri lebih senang menyebutnya "affiliate program" karena ini istilah yang lebih umum digunakan para marketer.
Ide Di Balik Model Bisnis Affiliate Marketing
Anda pernah bekerja untuk seseorang atau perusahaan dan mendapatkan komisi? Affiliate marketing adalah model bisnis semacam itu.
Sebagai contoh, dulu waktu sekolah, saya pernah jualan buku cerita untuk anak-anak. Saya berjalan kaki dari rumah ke rumah dan mengetuk setiap pintu, berharap ada yang mau membeli buku cerita yang saya jual.
Kalau saya berhasil menjual satu produk buku yang saya pasarkan, maka si pemilik buku (affiliate merchant) memberi saya persentase dari hasil penjualan. Dan tentu saja kalau saya tidak berhasil menjual buku, saya tidak dibayar.
Anda pernah juga diberi uang jasa karena berhasil mendapatkan orang yang bersedia melakukan transaksi bisnis dengan seseorang?
Kalau di dunia nyata biasanya hal ini kita kenal dengan istilah 'calo', 'perantara' atau 'broker'.
Contoh lainnya, ada mobil yang akan dijual, kita bantu mencari orang yang ingin membeli mobil tersebut. Kalau kita berhasil mendapatkan orang yang mau membeli mobil tersebut, kita biasanya diberi komisi atas jasa kita mendapatkan orang yang mau membeli mobil tersebut.
Affiliate marketing kurang lebih juga serupa dengan bisnis itu!
Ada banyak affiliate merchant yang bersedia membayar kalau kita berhasil mendapatkan calon pembeli yang memenuhi kualifikasi mereka. Dalam dunia internet marketing, calon pembeli ini biasa dikenal dengan sebutan "leads" atau "prospects".
Bagaimana Cara Affiliate Marketing Bekerja?
Sekarang kita sudah tahu apa yang dimaksud dengan 'Affiliate Marketing', dan tentunya kita ingin tahu BAGAIMANA cara kerja bisnis ini di internet sehingga kita bisa menghasilkan keuntungan!
Saya akan mengajarkan ini pada Anda dari mulai yang paling sederhana alias paling dasar.
Dalam bisnis online, semua affiliate marketer melakukan penjualan melalui 'link khusus' atau dikenal dengan istilah 'affiliate link'. Affiliate link ini diberikan oleh affiliate merchant (pemilik barang/jasa). Cara kerja affiliate link adalah sebagai berikut:
Misalnya kita menemukan sebuah produk online yang ingin kita jual. Lalu kita melihat website tersebut menawarkan program affiliate. Setelah kita pelajari ternyata mereka bersedia memberi kita komisi sebesar 40% untuk setiap penjualan yang kita hasilkan.
Kita kemudian mendaftarkan diri pada affiliate program tersebut dengan mengisi sebuah form. Biasanya merchant akan meminta kita untuk mengisi Anda, alamat lengkap, Anda penerima 'cek' (untuk komisi), email, nomor telepon, dll.
Kita juga akan diminta untuk membaca 'affiliate agreement'. Affiliate agreement adalah sebuah dokumen legal yang mengikat kita dengan affiliate merchant.
Isinya biasa menyatakan kesepakatan kita terhadap syarat dan ketentuan yang ditentukan oleh affiliate merchant, seperti tidak boleh mengirimkan email spam (email komersial yang tidak diminta oleh pemilik email tersebut).
Affiliate agreement ini penting karena jika kita melanggar syarat dan ketentuan yang telah tertulis di sana, affiliate merchant bisa menunda pembayaran atau bahkan mengeluarkan kita dari affiliate program mereka.
Nah, setelah kita menyatakan bersedia mematuhi affiliate agreement tersebut, affiliate merchant akan memberikan sebuah 'affiliate link' untuk kita. Tugas kita selanjutnya adalah mempromosikan affiliate link tersebut.
Misalnya saja dengan cara menempatkan link itu di web site kita atau di email signature, dengan harapan ada orang yang akan 'mengklik' dan MEMBELI produk/jasa yang kita pasarkan tersebut.
Nah, pada saat ada orang yang mengklik affiliate link kita dan melakukan pembelian, kita akan diberi komisi untuk penjualan tersebut!
Tapi ingat lho! Orang ini HARUS benar-benar melakukan pembelian.
Hanya karena seseorang mengklik link affiliate kita, bukan berarti affiliate merchant perlu membayar kita. Waah.. bisa rugi dong mereka!
Inilah tantangan sebenarnya dalam dunia affiliate marketing. Affiliate merchant melakukan tugasnya menjual dan mengirimkan produk/jasanya pada orang yang membelinya lewat link kita. Sedangkan kita menolong mereka dengan mempromosikan affiliate link yang mereka berikan.
Setiap affiliate link biasanya terdiri dari serangkaian angka atau huruf yang unik disertai dengan 'affiliate ID' kita, yang berfungsi mengidentifikasi KITA sebagai satu-satunya orang yang bertanggung jawab terhadap penjualan yang dihasilkan melalui affiliate link tadi!
Contoh :
Salah salah satu affiliiates yang saya ikuti yaitu di Asian Brain Internet Marketing Center. Anda melihat potential earning yang cukup menarik yang diberikan oleh PT. Asian Brain IMC. Lalu Anda mendaftar menjadi affiliate Asian Brain IMC.
Setelah Anda mendaftar, Anda akan mendapatkan 'affiliate link' dari PT. Asian Brain IMC seperti ini:

(Dalam hal ini, katakanlah kode affiliate Anda adalah 580082. Catatan: setiap orang yang mengikuti Program Affiliate PT. Asian Brain IMC akan mempunyai kode affiliate yang berbeda).
Lalu Anda promosikan link di atas dengan kreativitas Anda. Misalnya saja dengan membuat sebuah website yang mengulas tentang pentingnya pendidikan internet marketing, atau menulis pengalaman Anda belajar bersama Ahira ;-), di mana di dalamnya Anda sertakan affiliate link Anda menuju situs Asian Brain IMC.
Intinya, pada saat seseorang mengunjungi situs Asian Brain IMC 'lewat link Anda' dan kemudian dia bergabung, maka 'sistem affiliate' Asian Brain IMC akan 'merekam' bahwa affiliate code 580082 telah berhasil menjual. Sistem kami juga akan mengirimkan email secara otomatis kepada Anda pada saat Anda berhasil menjual.
Selanjutnya, Anda pun akan mendapatkan komisi dari PT. Asian Brain IMC!
